Ravenala is a genus of flowering monocotyledonous plants. Ravenala madagascariensis, also known as the traveller’s tree, traveller’s palm, or East-West palm, was once thought to be the only species in the genus Ravenala. It is a member of the Strelitziaceae family and not a real palm (family Arecaceae). The genus is closely linked to the genus Strelitzia in southern Africa and the genus Phenakospermum in South America. These genera are included in the banana family in certain older classifications (Musaceae). Despite the fact that it is commonly thought of as a single species, four distinct variants have been identified. [1] [2] In 2021, five new species, all from Madagascar, were described: [3] R. blancii Haev., V.Jeannoda & A.Hladik, R. grandis Haev., Razanats, A.Hladik & P.Blanc, R. hladikorum Haev., Razanats., V. Jeannoda & P.Blanc, R. hladikorum Haev., Razanats., V. Jeannoda & P.
